Transition Streets
Want to learn simple, practical changes to your home and habits to live more sustainably? Ready to begin a journey to a lifestyle that uses less energy? Check out Transition Streets!Transition Streets is a part of a larger organization known as Transition Town, focused on engaging communities in living more sustainably to create more resilient towns. This is an initiative that started in Totnes, UK in 2006, in response to diminishing fossil fuel reserves and climate change. Now over 1500 towns worldwide are responding to sustainability challenges with creativity and adaptability to live a more resilient life.Transition Town has been adapted to the United States, and Bozeman is one of fifteen communities in the nation that has been selected to pilot the Transition Streets workbook and program.Through weekly guides, the workbook functions to “help you save money, reduce your carbon dioxide emissions, and hopefully help minimize your household’s reliance on fossil fuels” by examining five topic areas: home energy use, water, food, waste, and transport. Each town that adopts Transition Streets will have a unique experience as it is up to the individual and community to decide what projects they want to take on, respond to, and what works best for them.Transition Streets attempts to answer: how can we live better socially, politically, and economically? Transition Streets embodies the idea of thinking globally and acting locally. Check out the Bozeman Transition Streets webpage, as well as the national Transition United States webpage, which can be used as a database for communities to start their own initiatives.
